S---h--r-ink-i--n---g Time
London
2025
Time is not fixed, but it is malleable and fluid. Time can be stretched or shrunk by experience and emotion. The piece consists of 3 fabric clocks that tick at different speeds depending on how tangled or compressed their fabric is. The light grey clock is completely compressed and so its time goes very fast. The dark grey clock is slightly compressed, so the time goes slightly slower. In contrast, the green clock is completely untangled and ticks very slowly, inviting the spectators to touch, compress, interact with it to change the speed of time.
Each of the clocks is made up of a knitted fabric in which wool and conductive thread intertwine to form a stretch sensor. As the fabric is compressed, the electrical resistance of the fabric change, and this is mapped to the velocity at which the clock ticks.
Through the interaction, time becomes physically malleable.
